Restoration of the Rumsey Shelter House at Delaware Park, built in 1935, began Thursday. The work is expected to be completed by next spring.
Grants of $250,000 from Bank of America and the Erie County Greenway Fund allowed the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy to secure the necessary funding to begin the project.
The Rumsey Shelter, located off the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Rumsey Road, has long been vacant. Most of the original interior tile work remains, along with the original windows, interior doors and fireplace. The mantel shelf is missing, but will be reconstructed based on original construction drawings.
