After lackluster performances up front on both sides of the ball against the Baltimore Ravens, the Buffalo Bills' offensive and defensive lines put forth better efforts in Week Two in a 31-20 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Bills pressured Philip Rivers on 12 of his 30 dropbacks, which equates to a relatively high rate of 40 percent. It was a drastic improvement from Buffalo's Week One showing, when the defense generated quarterback pressure on just 10 of 41 dropbacks (24.3 percent) between Joe Flacco and Lamar Jackson.
Jerry Hughes led the way for Buffalo with four pressures – two sacks, one hit, and one hurry – on just 18 pass-rush snaps. Kyle Williams had three hurries. Lorenzo Alexander had two pressures for one sack and one hurry.
Heading into Week Three, the Bills' defense is 19th in pressure rate at 30.9 percent, which just happens to be nearly identical to the league-average defensive pressure rate of 30.8 percent.
Josh Allen was pressured on 16 of his 41 dropbacks – he was credited with one of those pressures himself, a hurry – which is a pressure rate of 39 percent.
Up front, Dion Dawkins and Jordan Mills each surrendered two hurries. In pass protection, running back Marcus Murphy was credited with one hit and one hurry allowed.
Through two games, Bills quarterbacks have been pressured on 34 of 83 dropbacks or 40.9 percent, which, as shown in the table below, would be nearly equivalent to the second-highest defensive pressure rate.
The 0-2 Cardinals have created the highest pressure rate of 43.6 percent. They've pressured opposing quarterbacks on 31 of 71 dropbacks faced.
The Bills play the Minnesota Vikings in Week Three. Minnesota is third in defensive pressure rate at 40.6 percent.
