Lockport Mayor David R. Wohleben will return to his former post as 4th Ward alderman on Jan. 1. He is not on the ballot for mayor in November.
Wohleben was Common Council president when he became mayor Aug. 8 after Anne E. McCaffrey resigned. The Niagara County Republican Party nominated County Legislature Chairman W. Keith McNall instead of Wohleben to run for the unexpired term against Democrat Michelle M. Roman.
A city charter change made in 2016 allows an acting mayor who is not elected to that post to resume his alderman duties after a new mayor is sworn in.
Wednesday, Wohleben announced that Kelly VanDeMark, wife of city GOP Chairman Adam VanDeMark, will hold the 4th Ward Council seat for the rest of this year.
