Birds blamed for power outage at Buffalo Niagara International Airport

An errant flock of birds was blamed for a power outage that interrupted electrical service for about an hour Tuesday afternoon at Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

NYSEG spokeswoman Rachel Buchanan said a group of starlings flew into a power line and tripped equipment at a substation off Genesee Street in Cheektowaga at about 4 p.m. Service was restored by 5 p.m.

Airport operations relied on backup power sources, Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority spokeswoman Helen Tederous reported.

“There were no delays, no cancellations, no baggage issues,” she said. “We were able to keep operations moving. We made sure the customers were satisfied. People were extremely patient and understanding.”
