Beer notes: Malt Fest at Rusty Nickel, Hoptoberfest workshop in EA

Rusty Nickel appreciates malted grain

Rusty Nickel Brewing Company (4350 Seneca St., West Seneca) will present the second annual Malt Fest from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 29. The event features all things malty in New York State, with beers, spirits and drink samples from local breweries and distilleries.

Tickets cost $18 (available here), including a tasting glass, free samples, and live music.

An upgraded ticket is available for $24 and includes a pig roast dinner at a reduced rate (pig roast will be available day-of for non-upgraded ticket holders). The festival aims to celebrate the fall harvest, focusing on one of the main ingredients of beer and whiskey: malted grain. Call 608-6155.

Hoptoberfest via East Aurora Brewing

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County will host the fourth annual Hoptoberfest at East Aurora Brewing (667 Oakwood Ave., East Aurora) from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 27. The workshop will be taught by regional Cornell specialists and experienced Erie County growers and brewers.

The focus of the workshop is to assist individuals in learning how to grow hops commercially. Registration is required to attend and costs $15, online here or by contacting Megan Burley via email at or by phone at 652-5400 ext. 138.

NYBP makes muffins work in beer

New York Beer Project (6933 S. Transit Road, Lockport) will release a vanilla oatmeal muffin stout at 5 p.m. Sept. 20. The 5 percent ABV beer is brewed with local ingredients, including malts from Niagara Malting and NY Craft Malt, and hops from Vertical Vines.

Brewed with Ugandan vanilla beans and lactose, the vanilla oatmeal muffin stout yields aromas of dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, coffee and oatmeal. Call 743-6927.

Brickyard Brewing Company works with West Shore

Brickyard Brewing Company (436 Center St., Lewiston) will release Das Blep on Sept. 22. The 6.5 percent ABV (alcohol by volume) New England-style IPA (India pale ale) is brewed with Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin and Vic Secret hops.

Das Blep is a collaboration with West Shore Brewing in Clarence. Call 754-7227.

Resurgence Brewing's taproom exclusive

Resurgence Brewing Company (1250 Niagara St.) will release CitMo 2.0 on Sept. 19. The taproom-only release will feature four-packs of 16-ounce cans, and the beer will also be available on draft.

CitMo 2.0 is a hazy twist on the brewery’s original CitMo IPA, using a different yeast strain to aid in producing a juicier, hazier version. This is a limited batch, so get it before it’s gone. Call 381-9868.
