Addictions program to introduce new faith-based resource

Embrace Recovery Buffalo, a new nonprofit group dedicated helping people and families challenged by addiction, will host a free related program this weekend.

“Understanding Addiction and Recovery,” will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 22, at the HUB, 4999 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg.

Presenters will include Dr. Arthur Weissman, who will focus on effective treatment and hope when it comes to the opioid epidemic; and Avi Israel, of the nonprofit Save the Michaels of the World.

Resources will be available from local providers, as well.

Embrace Recovery Buffalo looks to help those struggling with addiction or life-controlling problems find compassion, hope, healing and lifelong recovery through a collaborative, faith-based approach. Dr. Darren Caparaso and mental health counselor Monica Farrar are co-directors.

A recent national report on the opioid crisis found that an American dies every 12.5 minutes from an overdose, a toll equal to 9/11 every three weeks. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports only about one in 10 of those with a substance addiction receives the help they need.
