Tonawanda woman, 40, killed by train while crossing railroad tracks in the town

A 40-year-old Town of Tonawanda woman was struck and killed Saturday by an Amtrak train as she walked across a set of railroad tracks in the town, police reported Monday afternoon.

Town police said Amy Gutierrez was walking westbound across tracks that run west of and parallel to Military Road just before 7 p.m. when a northbound train fatally injured her.

Gutierrez was struck at a point, just north of Sheridan, that is commonly used as a short cut for people who don't want to walk all the way south to Sheridan, where a railroad bridge carries the tracks over the road, said Tonawanda Police Lt. Thomas Haynes.

Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene and she was identified with the assistance of the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office. Haynes said police investigators from the town and CSX, which owns the tracks, will review surveillance video and other evidence to determine why Gutierrez was struck.
