Royalton woman dies after rear-end crash; driver jailed

A Royalton woman died Saturday evening after a car rear-ended a station wagon parked in front of 7626 Chestnut Ridge Road, near Hollenbeck Road, in the Town of Royalton, Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour reported.

The sheriff said that Mary Beccari, 58, a passenger in the station wagon, had walked in front of the vehicle when it was struck from behind and the station wagon hit her.

She was taken by ambulance to Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport, where she was pronounced dead.

Deputies, who were called to the scene at 6:50 p.m., charged the driver of the car, Nathaniel Miles, 23, of Royalton, with driving while intoxicated and second-degree vehicular manslaughter. He was arraigned in Royalton Town Court and remanded to Niagara County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. The sheriff said further charges may be pending.
