Shoplifter needed the basics for his new apartment

A 24-year-old man reportedly told Niagara Falls Police Saturday that he needed to pick up some household essentials for his new apartment, but couldn't afford to pay for them, so he tried to shoplift instead.

The man stuffed 31 small items into a backpack and tried to exit the Walmart store on Military Road just after midnight, but an alert employee stopped him. Andrew J. Luthman, of Elderberry Place, Town of Niagara, was brought back into the store, where employees recovered $103 worth of electronics, $51 worth of kitchen utensils and $39 worth of general merchandise crammed into the backpack.

Luthman was charged with petit larceny.
