Falls man shot through both legs in aborted robbery attempt

A man was shot through both legs about 9:45 p.m. Friday after he shoved a gun away during a robbery attempt, Niagara Falls Police reported.

Cyjear K. Betton, 20, of Sixth Street, told police two men approached him outside his home, asking to borrow his cellphone. Betton agreed and went inside to retrieve it.

When he returned, he told police, one of the men pulled out a small handgun and told him to empty his pockets. Betton reportedly refused, telling them to shoot him instead. When the gunman pointed his weapon at Betton’s chest, he pushed it down and it discharged, striking him in the lower left leg and lower right leg.

The assailants fled. Betton was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment.
