Former Sheriff Higgins honored in South Buffalo

When former Sheriff Thomas F. Higgins was born, the Bailey Avenue Bridges crossing Cazenovia Creek and the Buffalo River were opening to the public for the first time.

More than eight decades later, the bridges are gone, demolished and replaced, and so is Higgins, who died in June at the age of 88.

On Saturday, the former sheriff's friends and family joined elected officials in announcing the Sheriff Thomas Higgins Bridges, the official name given to the new spans near Bailey and South Park avenues.

Higgins, a U.S. Marine and Korean War veteran, served 42 years in local law enforcement, including three terms as Erie County sheriff.

Even after his retirement in 1998, Higgins remained a well-known political and community figure.
