Anderson, Team USA top Russia in volleyball

Matt Anderson of West Seneca and the Team USA is the only undefeated team in its pool after Saturday's 3-1 win over Russia in the World Volleyball Championships in Bulgaria and Italy. The U.S.-Russia match was played in Bari, Italy.
Anderson had 16 points against Russia, 13 spikes, 1 block and 2 serves. Aaron Russell led the U.S. with 17 points. The set scores were: 25-23, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-20.
It was the first loss for Russia (2-1) in pool play. The U.S. already has defeated Serbia (2-1) and Australia (1-2) and has Pool C matches left against Cameroon (1-2) and Tunisia (0-3).

The American lead the tournament with a 9-5 record in sets and have scored the most points, 306 while allowing 288.

In other matches on Saturday, defending champion Poland defeated Finland, 3-1, in its pool. Netherlands upset Olympic champion Brazil, 3-1, in its pool play.
