If you get a phone call that looks like it's from the Erie County Sheriff's Office about a warrant for missing jury duty, don't worry – and hang up.
The sheriff's office warned Friday that scammers are "spoofing" their phone numbers, which means the caller ID makes it seems it's a call from an official sheriff's office line, and telling people who answer that they need to pay a fine to have the warrant voided. The scammers tell them that they have to purchase a gift card or a prepaid Visa card to pay the fine.
"This is a scam!" the sheriff's office said on their Facebook page. "The Sheriff's Office does not conduct police operations this way or serve warrants over the phone. Please #JustHangUp."
