Repairs to Lockport veterans monument complete

A ceremony Thursday in Veterans Park in Lockport marked the completion of a second round of repairs to a 50-foot-tall marble monument created by Lockport artist A. Raphael Beck in 1930.

Modern Surface Solutions of the Town of Lockport was hired last October to repair falling pieces of stone and mortar, while an engineering report showed that silicone sealant applied in 2004 to the marble steps at the base of the monument was no longer waterproof.

A $100,000 state grant arranged by Sen. Robert G. Ortt, R-North Tonawanda, paid for the work. In 2004, the monument underwent $76,250 worth of repairs.

The monument, topped by a bronze statue, was erected in honor of World War I veterans, but plaques commemorating later wars have been added.
