We are appalled at the recent announcement by Catholic Charities that they have closed their foster and adoption program. Why? Divorced prospective foster parents or those who practice birth control? Or those who had sex before marriage? All against Catholic Church teaching I might add.
No! Because one gay couple asked to be foster parents.
As the parents of a gay son and his husband who adopted hard to place children in Seattle more than a decade ago we are more than appalled! We are outraged.
We are cradle Catholics who have donated to Catholic Charities all of our long adult lives. Now we must re-think where our hard earned money goes. We will not be party to an organization that so blatantly discriminates against parents like our son.
Over the years we have watched our son and his husband parent their children with total commitment. We have seen their extraordinary efforts to serve their children’s needs, rooted in their love for each other and their love for their children.
Maybe those policy makers in Catholic Charities should re-read their New Testament. St. Paul stated in Corinthians “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
