Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul is scheduled to speak today at the opening ceremony for the Western New York Welcome Center on Grand Island, according to the governor's press office.
The ceremony is set to start at 10 a.m.
The $20 million regional welcome center, located off Whitehaven Road, was built by the New York State Thruway Authority. It is a large, prairie-style building constructed along the Niagara Thruway on Grand Island. It is meant to draw drivers off the highway and introduce them to the region's history, attractions and local cuisine. The regional welcome center had a soft opening Monday, but is scheduled for an official grand opening on Friday.
