When President Trump is distressed he defends himself against his own unconscious impulses or denies their existence by attributing them to others. The term for this psychological defense mechanism is projection.
Recently, Trump became very upset with John Brennan, a former CIA Director who has been outspoken in his criticism of the president. Trump projected by calling Brennan a “loudmouth, partisan, political hack who cannot be trusted with the secrets of our country.”
Actually, it is Trump who cannot be trusted with the secrets of the country, as he has shared secrets at one of his fundraisers in New York City earlier this year, is a loudmouth, and is partisan.
He has punished Brennan by taking away his security clearance which is a great loss to our country’s national security as he has a wealth of information about his 30 years of government service, which would prove invaluable to this administration and others to come. Trump projects that the press is “the enemy of the people,” when in fact, it is Trump who is the enemy of the people as he has no one interests at heart, but his own.
