McDermott: McCarron 'absolutely in race' to start Week 1

AJ McCarron led the Bills to 25 points in the fourth quarter Thursday night to beat the Chicago Bears, 28-27, and close the preseason.

McCarron rebounded from an awful first three quarters to finish the game 13 of 34 for 156 yards and a 58.0 quarterback rating (his passer rating was 0.0 at one point).

He rushed for a 5-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, threw a nice 24-yard touchdown pass to Robert Foster, threw a 6-yard TD pass to Malachi Dupre and a 6-yard TD pass to Keith Towbridge with 13 seconds left for the game-winner.

The final drive was aided by a roughing the passer penalty on fourth-and-21 in the final minute.

So what now? To no surprise, coach Sean McDermott did not name a quarterback for the season opener at Baltimore. He did say that McCarron is 'absolutely in the race' and said that he played in the final preseason game was not a reflection of McCarron's roster status.

The Bills finished the preseason at 2-2.

“I love how our guys battled," McDermott said. "You don’t always see that in the fourth preseason game but they fought all night.”

The Bills trailed 20-0 at halftime, the second consecutive week that the Bills were down by that score at halftime. They lost 26-13 to Cincinnati last Sunday.
