New tech at Wegmans will give blind shoppers personal assistance

Wegmans shoppers with vision impairments will have a new tool to help them find what they need at the store beginning this fall.

Wegmans has partnered with an augmented reality program called Aira, which connects shoppers to a live operator who can direct them through the store to their products via a smartphone or smart eyeglasses.

Customers download the free app to a smartphone, which will connect them to a remote agent. Shoppers can request help navigating the store and finding specific items on their shopping list. The agent provides verbal assistance using the live camera stream from the smartphone to see what is in front of the shopper, along with GPS, maps and information from the Wegmans website.

The service is free to use in any Wegmans store.
