Thin Man brews badger-friendly beer
Thin Man Brewery (492 Elmwood Ave.) will release Badger Assassin, a dry-hopped sour ale, on Sept. 1. The 5.5 percent ABV (alcohol by volume) beer was brewed in collaboration with Shawn Kerr, brewmaster at Bolton Landing Brewing Company, and a longtime brewing companion of Thin Man head brewer Rudy Watkins.
The sour ale takes inspiration from New England-style IPAs (India pale ales) and traditional German Berliner Weisse. It features Galaxy, Citra and Simcoe hops, with notes of sweet orange, macerated peaches and grapefruit juice. Badger Assassin will be available on draft and in crowler fills; call 923-4100.

Resurgence touts fall beers
Resurgence Brewing Company (1250 Niagara St.) has brought back two fall favorites. Vanilla cappuccino pumpkin ale (7 percent ABV) is the brewery’s ode to fall, featuring notes of coffee and vanilla, mixed with flavors of pumpkin coming from the spice blend and pumpkin hearts used during the brewing process.
The brewery’s Oktoberfest (5.5 percent ABV) is a traditional Marzen-style German lager, ready just in time for Resurgence’s Oktoberfest Bash on Sept. 15. Call 381-9868.
Becker Farms grabs fall by the horns
Becker Brewing at Becker Farms (3724 Quaker Road, Gasport) will release two seasonal beers on Sept. 16 during its Oktoberfest celebration.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with live music by the Frankfurters from 1 to 4 p.m. Red Oktoberfest (6 percent ABV) is a twist on an old favorite, featuring Munich and Vienna malts for a red color and toasty character.
The Pumpkin Fiesta is a new imperial pumpkin ale (8.3 percent ABV) brewed with real pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, vanilla beans and green cardamom. Call 772-2211.
Five & 20 will roll out a cookie beer
Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing (8398 W. Main St., Westfield) will release two beers on Aug. 30. Oatmeal cookie brown ale (5.6 percent ABV) is a seasonal brown ale (draft only), available for growler fills, featuring oats and notes of cinnamon, yielding a chewy mouthful with sweet cookie and dark fruit flavors.
Barrelywine Ale (10.6 percent ABV) is a big, rich malty beer with notes of brown sugar and dark fruit. Aged in Five & 20's used Port and Sherry barrels, Barrelywine is available in large format bottles and on draft. Call 793-9463.
12 Gates weaves in blackberries, rhubarb
12 Gates Brewing Company (80 Earhart Drive, East Amherst) has released its newest beer, F.U.B.A.R.B. sour ale. The 3 percent ABV session beer is brewed in the style of a traditional German Berliner Weisse sour ale, treated with blackberries and rhubarb to add additional tartness and fruit flavors. NYBP previews Prost!fest
New York Beer Project (6933 S. Transit Rd., Lockport) will release its award-winning Prost! Oktoberfest lager. The 6 percent ABV beer is brewed in the German tradition, featuring toasty and bready notes, a rich copper color and medium-light body.
It will be released on Sept. 2 during the brewery’s Prost!fest, an all-day celebration of Oktoberfest featuring live music and German food specials. Call 743-6927.
Rusty Nickel unveils first of football series beers
Rusty Nickel Brewing Company (4350 Seneca St., West Seneca) has released two new beers: Blueberry Kolsch (5.5 percent ABV) and Pre-Season IPA, the first of the brewery’s annual Football Season Beer Series beers. Rusty Nickel will also present its annual Harvest Fest on Sept. 29 and 30.
The weekend-long celebration will include live music, a pig roast and various fall activities. Sept. 29 will also be the brewery’s second annual Malt Fest, a celebration of Buffalo area breweries’ malt-forward beers. Call 608-6155.
Flying Bison reels in New Zealand hops
Flying Bison Brewing Company (840 Seneca St.) will launch its new ZEAL! IPA, at 4 p.m. Aug. 30. The beer is a light-bodied, hazy New England-style session IPA, brewed with 100 percent New Zealand hops.
ZEAL! IPA features tropical and stone fruit aromas and flavors, and customers can purchase fresh bottles from the brewery from 4 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 30, the same day they are bottled. Call 873-1557.
