Woman fleeing police drives into backyard, attacks would-be rescuer

A Chaffee woman is being held in Cattaraugus County jail on multiple charges after police chase and an altercation Saturday night, State Police in Machias reported.

Troopers said Cassie D. Craft, 41, drove away after they stopped her for having one headlight on West Yorkshire Road at about 9:25 p.m. Officers said they stopped their pursuit after she hit a mailbox on Grove Street outside Delevan, then got a call that she had driven into the backyard of a home on Grove Street.

A neighbor there went to see if she was hurt. When he tried to take her car keys, troopers said, she struck him several times, tried to stab him with scissors and sprayed him with an aerosol can before officers arrived and arrested her.

Craft was arraigned in Town of Yorkshire Court on charges of third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, unlawfully fleeing from a police officer and numerous traffic counts.
