St. Joe’s, the defending Monsignor Martin Association champion, opened its soccer schedule on Monday with a 4-1 victory over visiting Orchard Park.
Joseph Fronczak, a junior striker, scored three times for the Marauders and assisted on the fourth goal by senior striker Oliver Wright. Evan Benz and Mark Varallo had assists for St. Joe’s.
Coach Mike Thoin’s team captured the Monsignor Martin playoff title with a championship-game win over Canisius, 3-2, on penalty kicks. The rivals had tied each of their regular-season meetings. Chase Eagan had the goal for Orchard Park (0-3).
Roy-Hart, which had a 10-win regular season in 2017, opened by edging CSAT, 5-4, in a nonleague match. Ethan Lindke scored two goals, including the winner for the Rams. Jose Campos had a goal and an assist, and Aidan Bligh had two assists for the winners.
Even though the start of classes is still a week away for most, league play in boys soccer begins in earnest today with matches scheduled in the ECIC and the Niagara Frontier League.
Frosh leads Silver Creek
Freshman Jade Bouvier scored all three goals for Silver Creek in a 3-0 nonleague triumph at Lake Shore. Senior captain Emma Rice assisted on all three scores.
Ella Massaro and Lenee Bowes each had two goals and an assist for Lew-Port (2-0) in a 6-0 nonleague triumph over Tonawanda. Massaro has three goals in two games so far.
The Lancers also had goals from Alexis Lindamer, her third of the season, and Elizabeth O’Keefe. Sarah Woods, a freshman, had a pair of assists for Lew-Port.
Sophomore forward Kristin Pickard scored twice as Starpoint edged West Seneca East, 3-2, in ECIC II. Lindsay Garbacz and Karlie Mann had the goals for WSE. Goalkeeper Sam Kaufman of the losing Trojans had an assist on Mann’s goal and made six saves.
Quakers win ECIC I opener
Julia Schurr scored twice and Rebecca Roman earned the shutout in Orchard Park’s 5-0 triumph over West Seneca West in an ECIC I opener.
