Man from Lackawanna missing after Jet Ski and boat collide in river

The search for a man who was thrown into the water when his Jet Ski collided with a boat off Niawanda Park Sunday afternoon was called off when darkness fell, police said.

Capt. Frederic Foels of the City of Tonawanda Police Department said the driver of the Jet Ski, which collided with the boat shortly after 4:30 p.m. off Niawanda Park, was a 51-year-old man from Lackawanna. His passenger, a woman, was pulled from the water after the collision and hospitalized.

The driver of the boat was described by Foels as a 59-year-old man from Niagara Falls.

Foels said, "Both vessels have been impounded and detectives are currently taking statements from persons involved and witnesses."

The U.S. Coast Guard, the Grand Island Fire Company and both Erie and Niagara County Sheriff's Departments aided the City of Tonawanda Police and Fire Departments. Several of the agencies remained on the scene until dark.
