Abdou Mbacké Thiam scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute to give Connecticut (2-0) a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Niagara (0-2) Sunday night before a crowd of 4,840 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. Niagara goalie Steve Casey was able to hold off the Huskies aside from Thiam's kick. Casey stopped three of the four shots on goal by the Huskies. UConn keeper Austin Aviza needed to make only one save. UConn outshot Niagara, 15-2, and had a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal and had 11 corners to two for the Purple Eagles.
For the second year in a row, St. Bonaventure (0-1-1) and Robert Morris played to a scoreless draw. Goalkeeper Luke Iacobellis of the Bonnies preserved the draw with a clutch save in the 83rd minute.
The Canisius women's soccer team (2-1) lost for the first time in three games, falling at Youngstown State, 1-0, on an own-goal in the 54th minute. Sammy Salatino of the Penguins booted a corner kick that deflected off a Canisius defender into the goal.
Niagara (2-1) scored a 3-2 overtime win over Robert Morris in Lewiston on a goal by Alexis Horwedel in the 95th minute Hailey Bicknell and Veda Hensel had the other goals for the Purple Eagles.
St. Bonaventure (0-2-2) played a 3-3 draw at UMass-Lowell. The Bonnies had to come back from a 3-1 deficit. Gretta LaCouture's second goal of he game in the 78th minute and S. Sousa-Sampson's tally in the 89th minute brought Bona back.
