Woman killed in collision at rural Batavia intersection

A Medina woman was killed Friday evening when another driver went through a stop sign at a rural Batavia intersection and collided with her vehicle, the Genesee County Sheriff's Department reported.

Pronounced dead at the scene Friday was Irene B. Cichocki of Medina.

Deputies say Lauren D. Power of Scotch Plains, N.J., was traveling south in a Honda Pilot on Wortendyke Road shortly after 6 p.m. Friday when she failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with State Route 33 and her vehicle struck a westbound Kia Sportage on the passenger side. The impact sent both vehicles off the south shoulder, overturning several times, before coming to rest in the front yard of a home.

Cichocki, driver of the Kia, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Genesee County Coroner's Office.

Deputies say the accident is still under investigation but Power was issued a ticket for failure to stop at a stop sign. Deputies said alcohol or drugs were not a contributing factor to the collision.

Three passengers in Power's vehicle - Marianne D. Ban of Hamlin, Sophia E. Buono of Rochester and Justin R. Barnard of Rochester - were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for minor injuries sustained in the crash.
