Suspected car burglar eludes Niagara Falls police by jumping fences

NIAGARA FALLS – Police officers chased a suspected car burglar through yards in the LaSalle section early Saturday before he finally eluded them in the Stephenson Avenue area. Officers were able to confiscate a bicycle and a pair of sneakers the suspect apparently left behind.

Officers responded to the 200 block of 69th Street around 6:30 a.m. on a report of a man on a bicycle "going through" cars. They spotted the suspect in a driveway on 68th Street, but he rode away by the time officers could turn their vehicles around. He was spotted again moments later at Edison Avenue and 68th Street, where he ditched his bicycle, jumped a fence and took off on foot, running through yards.

He was seen coming out of a garage in the 200 block of 69th Street, but officers lost sight of him in the area of 71st Street and Stephenson. Police recovered a Schwinn Ranger bicycle the man had been riding, along with a pair of size 11.5 Nike Air Force 1 sneakers.
