An error opened the door for Pawtucket in the sixth inning Saturday night. By the time the Buffalo Bisons could get out of the frame, the visiting Red Sox had scored four unearned runs on their way to an 8-5 victory over the Herd before 12,239 at Coca-Cola Field.
Luis Santos, who relieved Bisons starter Mike Hauschild to start the inning, was charged with three of the four runs, wiping out a 4-3 Buffalo lead.
Jonathan Davis hit a solo home run in the third to put the Bisons in front. It was his fifth of the season for the Herd, all coming in the month of August. Michael Chavis and Josh Ockimey hit home runs for Pawtucket.
Points of interest: After a two-out fielding error at third base by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the next five Pawtucket batters reached base in the Red Sox’s big sixth inning. Ockimey’s home run to right center followed the miscue. Mike Miller then singled, finishing Santos, who had retired the first two batters he faced. Two walks and a double by Dan Butler followed before the inning was over. … Guerrero Jr. was 1 for 3 with two walks and an RBI, his 11th with the Herd, Saturday night. That left his batting average at .372 with
Buffalo. The Bisons had 11 hits but left eight runners on base. Pawtucket had 13 hits and stranded 11.
Noteworthy: Jonathan Davis, who was batting .243 a little more than a week ago, has raised his average to .273 with two hits in five at-bats Saturday after he went 4 for 4 on Friday. Davis has reached base in 13 of the last 14 games. Over that stretch he has 17 hits in 58 trips for a .288 mark. … When catcher Alberto Mineo made his debut for the
Bisons on Friday, he became the 71st different player to pay in a Buffalo uniform this season. The record for one season is 73. Mineo, 24, a left-hand batting catcher, was born in Gorizia, Italy. He originally was signed as a 16-year-old by the Chicago Cubs in 2012 after playing in Australia. He played Rookie ball for three seasons before moving up to Class A in 2015.
Next: Right-hander Brandon Cumpton is scheduled starter for the Bisons in their final home day game of the season against righty Chandler Shepherd (6-9, 4.13) of Pawtucket. Buffalo’s final home game will be Monday night. … The Bisons will finish the regular season in New York State, playing four games at Rochester starting with a doubleheader on Tuesday night and finally four at Syracuse to close the season.
