We don’t need an audio tape of Donald Trump using a racial slur to confirm what we’ve already known: He’s a racist. This is not groundbreaking, earth-shattering news. He’s 72 years old, and over that time has compiled quite a collection of racist statements and actions.
His real estate company was sued for discrimination after avoiding renting apartments to black people. He advocated for the death penalty for the Central Park Five, all of whom turned out to be innocent.
He pushed the birther theory for our nation’s first black president. He called Mexicans rapists and murderers. He repeatedly uses dehumanizing language to attack athletes and politicians of color who have criticized him, as well as attacking their intelligence.
He put forth a policy that kidnaps immigrant children from their parents and puts them in cages. He demonizes Muslims and bans them from the country. We’d be here all day if I continued this list.
The point is, anyone with eyes and ears can confidently identify what kind of person Donald Trump is. An audio tape would just be added evidence to the mountain that already exists. We’ve heard a quote from Maya Angelou used quite a bit lately because it’s 100 percent true:
“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
When Donald Trump tells you over and over again that he’s a racist, believe him.
