Plans for 'town center' at Eastern Hills Mall can move forward

The proposed conversion of the Eastern Hills Mall into a town center cleared a key hurdle Wednesday when the Clarence Town Board approved the rezoning of the 86-acre site.

The Town Board rezoned the mall property at 4545 Transit Road from major arterial, commercial and restricted business to a newly created lifestyle center district that allows for denser and residential development within the mixed-use project.

Clarence Supervisor Patrick Casilio, who supports the site's reuse, said no one spoke at the public hearing preceding the vote.

New Jersey-based mall owner Mountain Development Corp. and Amherst-based Uniland Development Co. plan to redevelop the struggling mall into a walkable town center, anchored by new housing and a mix of retail, restaurants and community attractions.

Uniland previously said the feasibility and planning process is expected to take two to three years.

Uniland officially buys into Eastern Hills Mall. Next up: town center
