Women's outdoor event at North Forest

The 9th Annual Women Conquering Outdoor Adventures is set for Sept. 8 at the North Forest Rod and Gun Club, 6257 Old Niagara Road, Lockport, starting at 9 a.m. This full-day event allows women to choose four activities to expand their outdoor knowledge from local experts in their respective fields. Classes are available on archery, shotgun, rifle, pistol, kayaking, tree identification, what do if you get lost, among others.

Event organizers are asking participants to pre-register by Sept. 1. Cost is $65, which includes all equipment, lunch and the four separate sessions. Event space is limited to 100 students. For more information, contact Colleen Gaskill at 628-9023.

Miller wins Orleans County Derby

Joseph Miller of Harrisburg, Pa., reeled in a 29-pound, 14-ounce king salmon, good enough to win the $4,000 grand prize in the Orleans County Rotary Derby, held Aug. 4-19. He was fishing out of Point Breeze in Orleans County.

Other winners included Mike Schaeffer of Sligo, Pa., who won the Salmon Division with a 26-pound, 14-ounce king while fishing out of the Oak. Glenn Weber of Harrisburg, Pa., caught the biggest steelhead, at 12 pounds, 2 ounces. Top brown trout was a 14-pound, 13-ounce fish reeled in by Michael Grager of Lyndonville. First place lake trout was weighed in by Brian Gambell of Hilton, with a 17-pound, 12-ounce fish. He was fishing out of Bald Eagle Marina.

DEC, Iroquois NWR Waterfowl Meeting August 30

The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation and the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting its annual waterfowl hunter information meeting at the NWR headquarters, Casey Road, Alabama, on Aug. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Included in the evening’s agenda will be highlights of waterfowl management and research programs at Iroquois NWR, as well as Tonawanda, Oak Orchard and Braddock Bay Wildlife Management Areas. This will include draw-down schedules and hunt program news. There will be updates on the Atlantic Flyway with population status reports for waterfowl, including news from the region and the state. The 2018-19 duck and goose seasons also will be announced.

If you would like to take a tour of the wetland management work being performed within the Iroquois, Oak Orchard and Tonawanda public land complex, special arrangements will be provided at the meeting.

Free Kids Fishing Derby in Lockport

The 5th Annual End of Summer Free Kids Fishing Derby for kids 14 years of age and under will take place Saturday in the Erie Canal at Widewaters Marina located on Market Street in Lockport. The fun-filled event will begin registration at 8 a.m., and the fishing will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m.

Among the prizes are bikes, kayaks and gift certificates. The grand prize is a new canoe. You don’t even need to bring the worms – they will be provided. Lunch is being donated by area pizza shops. For more information, contact freekidsfishingderby@gmail.com.
