Record gar caught in Lake Champlain

Another fish record has been broken.

This time it’s an impressive longnose gar that weighed in at 14.85 pounds by Mike Gatus of Hoosick Falls. He was fishing in Lake Champlain in South Bay, targeting catfish late Saturday night, when the 52-1/4-inch fish hit his piece of chunk bait. He weighed it in at a local Tops supermarket for the official weight about 10:30 p.m.

The previous record was a 13-pound, 3-ounce gar reeled in by Kenneth Cassant, also while fishing Lake Champlain in 1999. The fish stretched 49.5 inches long.
