Niagara County Community College held a soft opening Wednesday at its new $25 million Learning Commons on the main Sanborn campus.
Niagara County and the State University of New York system split the cost of the project. The Commons was built in what used to be an open courtyard next to the library. The Commons provides 11,000 square feet of indoor study space in a roofed atrium.
The library also was renovated, and 12 nearby classrooms were converted into eight larger ones.
A formal ribbon-cutting at the new facility is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 6., said William L. Ross, chairman of the NCCC Board of Trustees.
The project was first mentioned in a 2006 campus master plan, but construction didn't start until a decade later.
