The region’s comedy rooms are bringing the heat as we head into the end of August. Here’s our top picks for Aug. 23-29.
• Comedy star Hannibal Buress has booked last minute shows at Helium Comedy Club on Aug. 28 and 29. It’s about par for the course for the laidback favorite, who last appeared in Buffalo for a similar last-minute show in 2016. Over the past few years, Buress has turned his impressive writing resume for “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” and roles on “The Eric Andre Show” and “Broad City” into scene-stealing appearances in “Daddy’s Home,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Tag.” Buress is set to perform at 7:15 and 9:30 p.m. Aug. 28, and 7:15 p.m. Aug. 29. • Nicole Byer is set to headline a weekend of shows at Helium Aug. 23-25. The “Girl Code” breakout star has landed her own scripted series on MTV, “Loosely Exactly Nicole.” She has made appearances on “@Midnight,” “Chelsea Lately” and “30 Rock,” and continues to perform sketch and improve comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade theater in Los Angeles. • Shaun Murphy, a homegrown comic from Tonawanda, headlines a show at 8 p.m. Aug. 25 at Rob’s Comedy Playhouse in Williamsville. Murphy got his start performing at the old Comix Café in Tonawanda, and from there moved to New York City to pursue a career in comedy and writing. He’s earned respect and acclaim in the industry for his writing wit and well-crafted jokes, and he’s performed at comedy festivals in Boston, Ma. and Asheville, N.C.
