Paddle for the Troops, a fundraising paddling event to benefit Higher Ground New York, an organization that serves military members through recreation and sports, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at Buffalo RiverWorks, 359 Ganson St.
Paddlers of all skill levels are welcome, said Kathy Weppner of Higher Ground. There will be competitive racing for adults and youth-friendly competition for others. Paddleboards and kayaks are available for rental.
Higher Ground is a non-profit organization that uses recreational therapy like kayaking and fishing to improve the mental and physical health of military service members, veterans, their families and others.
Programs for people with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress and military sexual trauma are conducted during weeklong camps at Beaver Hollow Conference Center in Java. The course helps to instill the strategies necessary for a successful life after military service, said Weppner.
