An inmate at the Erie County Holding Center whose health was deteriorating after refusing to take prescribed medications was removed from his cell by the sheriff's Quick Entry Team and taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment, the Erie County Sheriff's Office said.
The inmate, who was not identified, was under medical and mental health care but refusing to take his prescribed medication. Sheriff's officials said he became combative.
"The inmate’s health was worsening to the point where medical and mental health professionals and jail management supervisors decided to extract the inmate for the safety of staff and well-being of the inmate," a statement from the sheriff's office said.
On Saturday, the Quick Entry Team had "a final conversation with the inmate" and the inmate became compliant. Sheriff's officials said he was removed without incident and taken to ECMC. He was later released and returned to the Holding Center.
