Pope, Eggert add names to Lockport mayoral field

Former Niagara County Refuse Disposal District Director Richard P. Pope and Alderman Lawrence M. Eggert have asked to be considered for the Republican nomination for mayor of Lockport.

They join Mayor David R. Wohleben and County Legislature Chairman W. Keith McNall in the contest to run for a one-year unexpired term in November. Wohleben became mayor Aug. 8 after Anne E. McCaffrey resigned to become CEO of Eastern Niagara Hospital. The county GOP committee will choose the nominee.

Pope resigned from the county job Jan. 2, 2013, after an investigation of alleged misuse of county vehicles and violations of the county's residency policy. Eggert, the former city police chief, was elected alderman-at-large last year.

Michelle M. Roman, a schoolteacher, is expected to be the Democratic mayoral nominee.
