Junior Margretta Dry (Lockport) scored on a header just 53 seconds into overtime to give Canisius a 3-2 victory over Saint Francis in Loretto, Pa., in the Golden Griffins women's soccer season opener.
Senior Paige Buscaglia (Akron) scored twice for the Griffs while freshman Hope Balling (Tonawanda) had two assists in her first collegiate game. Alicia Larsson Vahlberg assisted on the winning goal, which Dry headed off the crossbar for her 11th career tally.
Junior Sydney Cerza (Clarence) had the only goal for St. Bonaventure in a 2-1 loss at Kent state on Sunday. The Bonnies fell to 1-1 for the season. Cerza tied the game with her second goal of the season in the 59th minute. The host Golden Flashes got the winner with less than three minutes to play.
Niagara opened its season with a 4-1 loss a Bucknell. Freshman Ashley Lofranco scored in the 88th minute for the Purple Eagles with an assist from Veda Hensel.
