Heavy rains cause flooding in Amherst and Kenmore

A flood warning for northern Erie County ended this morning, but businesses and homeowners are still dealing with the after affects of last night's heavy rains.

The City Mattress store at Sheridan Drive and Millersport is open, but a salesmen there says a portion of the store's lower level is flooded.

He said he also believes neighboring businesses suffered rain damage, as well.

The heavy overnight rain also hit Kenmore hard, and police there report that a number of residents called overnight to complain about flooded basements.

The heavy rains also resulted in road closures in some areas, including portions of Elmwood Avenue and Delaware Road in Kenmore. Police say those roads are now open.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service issued a flood warning covering northern Erie County, southern Niagara County, southern Orleans County and all of Genesee County.

The warning was dropped about six hours later.

The forecast calls for the rain to taper off today with a change to party sunny skies and a high temperature of 79 degrees.
