Bisons drop 4-2 decision at Gwinnett

The Buffalo Bisons opened their series with the Gwinnett Stripers with a 4-2 loss at Coolray Field Thursday night.

The Stripers took a 3-0 lead in the third as Luis Marte had an RBI double and Danny Santana knocked a two-run homer to right center field off Bisons starter Brandon Cumpton.

The Herd got two back in the fifth thanks to back-to-back sacrifice fly outs. Reese McGuire and Darnell Sweeney cashed in runners to trim Gwinnett’s lead to 3-2.

But the Stripers would get another run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a double by Rio Ruiz.

After that, the Herd couldn’t get anything going on the bases. Rowdy Tellez grounded into a double play in the sixth, erasing a single from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. In the seventh, Tim Lopes singled but was caught stealing. The eighth saw Guerrero Jr. draw a two-out walk, but Tellez struck out to end the inning. And the Bisons went down in order in the ninth.

Noteworthy: Guerrero Jr. finished 2 for 2 with a walk. … Lopes also had two hits for the Herd. … Cumpton (2-3) took the loss, giving up eight hits including four doubles and one home run. … The Bisons are now 1-3 against Gwinnett this season.

Point of interest: While the Bisons got runners on base in the game, they failed to get them in scoring position. For the game, the Herd was 0 for 1 with runners in scoring position. It was Anthony Alford who stranded that runner — grounding into a force out with Guerrero Jr. on second in the first inning.

Up next: The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Friday (1520 AM) with Murphy Smith (2-4, 3.97) scheduled to start for the Bisons. The Stripers did not name their starter.
