Before Tuesday night only three International League teams hit fewer home runs than the Buffalo Bisons’ 85.
The Herd stepped out of character, though, unleashing their power with a season-high six home runs in a 14-5 rout of the Charlotte Knights at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, N.C. The run total was also a season high for Buffalo.
Rowdy Tellez hit two of the Buffalo home runs, giving him 13 for the season. He also doubled for a three-hit night. Billy McKinney, Darnell Sweeney, Reese McGuire and Dwight Smith Jr. had the other homers. It was the second home run in two nights for McKinney and second since joining the Herd but 15th overall. Five of the Herd homers were solo shots.
Points of interest: Rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. returned to the Bisons’ lineup and went 1 for 5. He struck out twice, walked once and scored twice. His sharp ground single to center with two out in the third inning came before Tellez’s first homer. … The Herd tied their season high with 18 hits with all nine slots in the order contributing. The Bisons had five doubles, two by Anthony Alford.
Noteworthy: Right-hander Mike Hauschild went five innings to get the win in his debut with the Bisons. He threw 83 pitches, allowing two runs on six hits. Hauschild’s father is the long time sports information director at the University of Dayton. … The teams entered the game with identical 54-63 records.
Next: Lefty Matt Tracy (0-1, 2.33) will pitch for Buffalo in the season finale between the teams against lefty Jordan Guerrero (4-1, 2.66) of the Knights (Radio 1520, 7:05 p.m.).
