Niagara County public information officer quits

Christian W. Peck, who had been Niagara County's public information officer since July 2008, resigned this week.

Peck, a former newspaper reporter, is the only person ever to hold the post, a political patronage job answerable only to the County Legislature. During his tenure, Peck's salary grew from $39,500 to $71,843 a year, despite occasional efforts by the Legislature's Democratic minority to abolish the position.

Peck served on the county Republican Party's executive committee. In April, Peck and Lockport Mayor David R. Wohleben cast the only votes against Legislator Richard L. Andres Jr. of North Tonawanda taking over from Lockport's Adam VanDeMark as county GOP chairman.

Peck could not be reached Thursday. Joanna M. Marble, executive assistant to County Manager Richard E. Updegrove, said she will handle media contacts for now.
