Amanda Bernardini created a following by posting adorable, intricately decorated sugar cookies to Instagram.
But her dreams were bigger. Bernardini is taking her sugar-taming skills to 220 Allen St., where she plans to open a dessert bar called Mundy Cakes.
The space was last Sweet Temptations du Jour.
"It already was a bakery, so everything's already in there, and it's all ready to go," Bernardini said.
Bernardini said baking cookies is "something I've been doing since I was a little girl." She went semi-pro about eight months ago, when she started doing custom sugar cookies for parties, weddings and other occasions, and displaying the designs on Instagram.
"The orders I get are primarily from Instagram," she said, though her Italian-style cookies are also available at Tappo.
Now she's working on a cosmetic remodel of the bakery space to allow breakfast-bar type seating.
Besides cookies, she is planning on offering loaded ice cream sandwiches, dessert tacos, and churros or other fried sweets. Dessert garbage plates are also in the offing, if you can imagine brownie instead of burger and caramel instead of sauce.
She's expecting to start a soft-opening phase in mid-September, and hold a grand opening in early October.
Expect "crazy desserts, gluttonous desserts, and fun atmosphere," she said.
At first, Bernardini expects to open at 4 or 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and stay open late. She might add Sundays, but she has to see how it all works out. There's only one way to tell: "I'm just taking the biggest risk of my life and going for it."
