Walks, errors lead to Depew loss in State Legion play

Depew Post 1528 overcame a four-run deficit but went back to playing the ball that caused the trouble in the first place Monday night and dropped a 9-5 game to the Rockland County Pirates in the third round of the New York State American Legion Baseball Tournament at Murnane Field in Utica.

Depew will face the winner of an afternoon game between the Clinton County Mariners and Rayson-Miller Post of Pittsford at 7 p.m. Tuesday in an elimination game. The winner will take on Rockland County on Thursday.

Connor Duck and Ryan Mansell each had two-out singles to drive home the runs as Depew cut into the 4-0 deficit in the bottom of the third. Three runs in the fourth gave Depew the lead, 5-4, and knocked out Rockland starter Michael Dunne. Collin Reformat (double) and Alex Bish (single) drove in the first two runs, and Dominic Monti’s double delivered the third.

However, Rockland scored twice in the fifth after two were out to retake the lead and added three more in the sixth against A.J. Hammer, the third of four pitchers for Depew. Left-hander Michael Pavelchak shut out Depew on one hit the last three innings.

Rockland hit only one ball out of the infield in building its 4-0 lead after two innings against Reformat, who walked five, hit a batter and wild-pitched a run home. In all, Depew pitchers issued 12 walks, and there were five errors behind them. The losers outhit Rockland, 8-7.
