Phone scammers pretend to be Erie County employees

Erie County administrators have received complaints from residents saying scammers or telemarketers are calling them, pretending to be Erie County officials asking for money.

Residents are picking up their phones after seeing caller ID labels showing “ERIE-COUNTY, OF” and a local phone number that starts with "858-" which is the three-digit start of most Erie County government phone lines. The deceptions result in efforts to obtain money from the resident answering the phone.

While county officials do not recommend that residents ignore calls that appear to be from county personnel, they are reminding residents that county government employees will never ask people to send or wire money for prizes, or to pay unpaid loans or fines, or to add funds to a prepaid debit card, or make threats regarding legal action.
