Paul Tripi (Maryvale) drove home the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning and Depew Post 1528 advanced to the third round of the New York State American Leagion Baseball Tournament with a 4-2 victory over Schenectady Sunday at Murnane Field in Utica.
Depew seemed in control behind the one-hit pitching Tyler Brill (Niagara County CC) going to the bottom of the seventh with a 2-0 lead. Aided by Depew's only error of the game, Schenectady scored twice in the bottom of the seventh with just one hit, a leadoff single by Aaron White.
Coach Tony Sekuterski's Depew team came right back with two runs in the top of the eighth. Connor Duck (Lancaster) reached on an error before a fielder's choice, a single by Ryan Voigt (Lancaster) and an intentional walk filled the bases for Tripi. After his hit produced the go-ahead run Collin Reformat (RIT) sent home the second run on a groundout to second.
Glenn Stever (NCCC) shut down Schenectady in its last at-bat, striking out two before getting the final out on a fly to center.
Brill gave up only three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. Tripi had three of the eighth Depew hits against losing pitcher Alec Ritzenthaler.
Depew will face two-time defending champion Rockland County Pirates at 7 p.m. Monday. Rockland advanced on a no-hitter by Colton Stemkowski against Rayson-Miller Post of Pittsford Sunday night.
