Depew wins opener in a rout at State Legion Tournament

Depew Post 1528 took advantage of six Utica errors and 11 bases on balls Saturday in an 11-0 victory in an opening game of the New York State American Legion Baseball tournament at Murnana Field in Utica.
Depew had only four hits but shaky Utica fielding and pitch control combined with aggressive base running more than made up for it.

The winners took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when leadoff man Dominic Monti reached on a two-base error by the Utica left fielder and scored on another error.

A four-run third inning broke it open. One run came across on a squeeze play bunt by Ethan Krakowski another on a steal of home by Tripi. Depew had only two hits in the inning, singles by Ryan Voight and Tripi. Ryan Mansell singled, stole second and third and scored on a wildpitch top make it 6-0 in the fifth.

The 10-run rule was invoked after Depew scored five runs inthe fifth, with five walks and an error. Voight, a second-team All-Western New York catcher from Lancaster, doubled home two runs in the frame. Voight had two of the four Depew hits and drove in three runs.

Left-hander Alex Bish (Niagara County CC) allowed three hits and struck out seven in five innings for Depew. Tyler Brill , another NCCC lefty,  allowed one hit and struck out the side to close it out in the sixth.

Depew will face Vestal/ Schenectady at 5 p.m. today in the second round of the double-elimination tournament to determine New York representative to the Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Purcellville, Va., Aug. 8-12.  Glenn Steve (Clarkson) is scheduled to start for Depew today. Schenectady edged Vestal, 3-2, with a run in the eighth inning.
The National American Legion Tournament will be in Shelby, N.C. Aug. 16-21.

Also advancing was Rayson-Miller Post of with an 8-7 win over Clinton County of Plattsburgh.
Two-time defending champion Rockland County Pirates faced host Andrean Post of Utica in the final game of opening day.
