O'Connell season has 'Little Shop,' a holiday 'Nuncrackers' and more 'Diva'

A cult musical, a beloved two-hander from A.R. Gurney, continued performances of a perennial favorite and four shows at the Shea's Smith Theatre are all featured in the recently announced 2018-19 season for O’Connell & Company.

The season officially opens at Shea's Smith Theatre with "Gentlemen Prefer Divas - Buffalo Legends" at 8 p.m. Sept. 24 as part of Curtain Up! festivities. O'Connell & Company will also present the following shows at Shea's Smith: "Betsy Carmichael's Christmas Special," Dec. 14-23, "The Kathy & Mo Show: Parallel Lives," Jan. 18-27 and "An Act of God," April 5-7.

The following productions are at Park School of Buffalo (4625 Harlem Road, Snyder).

"Little Shop of Horrors," Oct. 4 to 28 and Oct. 31. Fun musical about a man-eating Venus flytrap.

“Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical,” Nov. 29 to Dec. 23. Just in time for the holidays is this sequel with the singing-and-dancing nuns. This time, the sisters tape a TV special in the convent basement studio.

“Love Letters,” Jan. 31 to Feb. 24. A rotating cast of local actors will take on the roles of two childhood friends who write letters to each other over 50 years in Buffalo native A.R. Gurney’s popular play.

“1776,” April 25 to May 19. An all-female cast will take to the stage in this regional premiere of the Broadway musical about the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

“Memories & Martinis with Mary Kate O’Connell,” June 6-23. The company founder and award-winning actress will share an evening of "songs, stories, love, laughter, banter and beverages" in this intimate cabaret performance.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $30 with discounts available for military, industry, students and the Park School community. A Season Flex Pass features six admissions for the price of five.

More 'Diva'

Before the official start of the season, the company will present a special performance of “Diva by Diva" called "American Patriot… A Woman’s Journey” at 2 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site (641 Delaware Ave.). The performance marks the date – Aug. 26, 1920, that the 19th Amendment became law and allowed women to vote. Tickets for that show are $20 general; $15 for members. Call 884-0095 or

Regular season performances of “Diva by Diva: A Celebration of Women!” will rotate with "Gentlemen Prefer DIVAs!" Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Feb. 13, March 13, April 10, May 9 and June 12.
