Two Sabres sled hockey players named to national team

Two members of the Buffalo Sabres sled hockey team were named to the 2018-19 U.S. National Team.

Luke McDermott, a member of the gold medal-winning team at the 2018 Paralympics, and Colin Gooley, who is making the jump from the development team, will both represent Team USA this year. Gooley is one of five newcomers named to the team.

McDermott, a Westerlo native, is a Marine veteran. He made his national team debut in 2015 and was part of the gold medal team at the 2015 World Championships and the silver medal team at the 2017 World Championships.

McDermott, a forward, graduated from Texas Christian in 2014. He had both legs amputated below the knee after being injured by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2010.

Gooley, a Baldwinsville native, has been on the development team since 2016. This is his eighth year playing sled hockey since a battle with osteogenic sarcoma left him permanently disabled below the waist.
