Casey Kelly leaving St. Joe's for North Carolina power

Casey Kelly is no longer a St. Joe's Marauder.

Kelly, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound quarterback, has transferred to Mallard Creek in Charlotte, N.C., the school's athletic director and coach confirmed to The Charlotte Observer.

Mallard Creek, which won three consecutive North Carolina state 4AA championships from 2013 to '15, is coming off a 14-1 season in which it suffered its only loss in the state 4AA final.

Kelly has not returned messages seeking comment. St. Joe's athletic director Brian Anken has declined comment.

Football practice begins Monday in North Carolina.

Official word of the transfer follows weeks of speculation after Kelly's photo and bio appeared on Mallard Creek's roster page on MaxPreps. At the time, Mallard Creek athletic director Philip Davanzo III said, "This is news to me."

"He has not registered with me and I handle all athletic registration," he said. "I don't know why he is on a roster. I know our coaches didn't put rosters out."

Kelly passed for 873 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 801 yards and 15 scores in helping St. Joe's reach the Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association final, where it suffered a tough 22-14 loss to rival Canisius. He started for two seasons for the Marauders.

Kelly is also a lacrosse standout who helped St. Joe's win its third straight Monsignor Martin title last spring en route to first-team All-Western New York honors. He finished with 36 goals and 40 assists. Mallard Creek does not have a lacrosse program.

Kelly recently played in the Under Armour All-American boys lacrosse game in Baltimore.
