The cities of Niagara Falls and North Tonawanda and the Town of Wheatfield have agreed to jointly seek state funding for an estimated $4.77 million worth of Niagara River Greenway bicycle and pedestrian trails from Gratwick-Riverside Park in North Tonawanda to LaSalle Waterfront Park in the Falls. The route runs along River Road in Wheatfield.
The Niagara Falls City Council will hold a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to be the first to ratify the deal. The localities will ask the Department of Transportation to pay for 80 percent of the trail, with construction targeted to begin next March and finish in July 2021.
The localities will seek the $980,000 local share of the cost from Greenway funds and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation.
